INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Medical malpractices victims may be able to receive more money now that the Senate passed a proposal to increase the compensation cap for the first time in nearly 18 years.

The bill passed 49-0 Tuesday and now heads to the governor’s desk for consideration.

The measure would increase the current $1.25 million limit to $1.65 million next year and then to $1.8 million in 2019. The original proposal imposed incremental increases every four years until 2031 to keep up with inflation, but it saw backlash from medical associations that said doctors would not be able to absorb the costs since their malpractice insurance premiums would also rise.
