Norfolk Southern to cut 160-170 jobs in Fort Wayne this year

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Norfolk Southern Corp. has announced plans to cut 160 to 170 jobs by the end of the year at its Triple Crown Services subsidiary in Fort Wayne.

The Journal Gazette reports a notice the company filed with the state says the Fort Wayne jobs are among 193 the railroad plans to eliminate at the subsidiary in Indiana and other states on or after Nov. 17.

Triple Crown President Jim Newton said Friday that the company uses specialized equipment called the RoadRailer to ship freight for customers. The convertible containers can be used both as rail cars and semitrailers. He said Norfolk Southern officials decided it would be more efficient to move most shipments in conventional semitrailers riding stacked one or two high on top of flat railroad cars.
