American Senior Communities says it's cooperating with FBI investigation

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) — A nursing home company whose Indianapolis headquarters was raided by federal agents says it’s cooperating with a government investigation.

American Senior Communities issued a statement Wednesday saying it’s been contacted by the federal government “in connection with an investigation into certain individuals or practices.” The company that operates dozens of Indiana nursing homes says it’s conducting an internal review and that it complies with all laws and regulations.

Several FBI and IRS agents spent several hours Tuesday searching the headquarters and the Carmel home of company CEO James Burkhart. Burkhart issued a statement saying the company will be “an active partner” with the government in the investigation.

FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne said she could not disclose the nature of the investigation. No arrests or charges have been announced.
