Fort Wayne airport gets $12.9M grant for rehab of its primary runway

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Fort Wayne International Airport is getting a federal grant worth about $12.9 million for rehabilitation of its primary runway.

The Journal Gazette reports the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration was announced Thursday by officials with the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority. Construction will likely start in spring 2016 on the project, which has an estimated cost of $14.3 million.

Airport officials say the project would likely be finished in late August. According to officials, construction won’t affect flights at the airport. A secondary runway would be used once construction begins.

Officials say traffic at the airport was up 15 percent for the year through July.
