Memorial Day 2016: Elkhart couple places 6,855 American flags in their yard

An Elkhart couple placed 6,855 American flags in their yard for Memorial Day — one for each American solider who died since 9/11.

“We just want to remind everybody what Memorial Day means,” Debbie Passerallo told our news partners ABC 57 about the flags she and her husband Sam placed in their yard. “This is for those who paid that big price to make sure it doesn’t come here. It is our duty to make sure they’re not forgotten and I take that very seriously.”

Passerallo’s son, Staff Sgt. Jesse Williams, was killed in Afghanistan in 2013.

Since then, she has poured her heart into the non-profit Jesse’s Warriors, which aims to honor and help American military members and their families.

Jesse’s Warriors is planning a memorial ride on Saturday, June 4, starting at Hoosier Harley Davidson, 720 E. Bristol St., Elkhart, and ending with an event open to everyone at the Moose Lodge, 1500 C.R. 6, Elkhart.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the ride will start at 11 a.m. The ride is $15 for riders and $10 for passengers. The first 250 riders will get a t-shirt.
