Driver in deadly Berrien County crash was intoxicated, police say

Police have determined that the driver of a vehicle in which two people were found dead over the weekend was intoxicated when the car crashed into a creek.

Autumn Mehl was driving the car when it crashed and had a blood alcohol content level of 0.14 percent, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08 percent.

Mehl, 29, and 26-year-old Steven Rough were found dead in Mehl’s car in Brandywine Creek on Sunday morning, Feb. 14. The vehicle was overturned in the creek off of Bond Street. Autopsies showed that both Mehl and Rough drowned to death.

Mehl was a mother of three. Rough had one child.

The crash remains under investigation.
