The Humane Society of St. Joseph County is urging pet owners in St. Joseph County to vaccinate their dogs and ferrets exposed to the outdoors.

That’s because an unusually high number of sick and dead raccoons recently found in northern St. Joseph County have tested positive for canine distemper and virus-induced pneumonia.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease with no known cure that affects dogs, ferrets, raccoons and similar animals. Symptoms include fevers, red and watery eyes, anorexia and even seizures.
