Elkhart man charged with child molestation

An Elkhart man faces two charges of child molestation after police say he touched two young children inappropriately.

Mitchel Jay Allen Werling, 20, was living with a relative and four young children he was not related to last spring, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners at The Elkhart Truth.

Werling was asked to leave the home and was reported to police after one of the children told an adult about an incident of inappropriate touching, The Elkhart Truth reported. He told one of his victims not to tell anyone and, in exchange, gave the child gifts, including video games and cookies, according to court documents.

Werling admitted to “making mistakes” in an interview with police. He was arrested in March and was still held on $20,000 bond in Elkhart County Jail as of Friday afternoon, April 3.

His trial date is set for Aug. 10. If convicted, Werling could spend 4 to 16 years in prison.
