Supreme Court same-sex marriage ruling celebrated at LGBT pride event in Michigan

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — A statue of a man in traditional Dutch shoes was draped with a rainbow flag during an event to celebrate gay pride in western Michigan.

The timing was coincidental but significant Saturday — just a day after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage across the country.

It’s the 11th year for the gay pride event in Holland, but only the third year it’s been held outside. Dean DeRidder says the conservative city near Lake Michigan “has come a long way.”

The Holland Sentinel says more than 50 vendors attended the event at Window on the Waterfront Park. A drag show was planned at the Holland VFW.

Amber LaNore of Hudsonville was married last year in Chicago. She says same-sex marriage is the “law of the land now.”
