Accidental drowning claims life of Cassopolis man at Belas Lake

A Cassopolis man accidentally drowned on Belas Lake in Cass County.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies and the Cass County Marine Division were called around 7:20 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, when a kayak was located adrift at the northwest corner of the lake.

The kayak was unoccupied with hunting equipment, floating nearby. Authorities investigated the area and located the owner of the kayak, dead, below the surface of the water.

The victim was identified as Terry Allen Westphal, 50.

The initial investigation shows that Westphal, fell into the water from his kayak and drowned. An autopsy is pending at Western Michigan University’s WMed Forensic Pathology Center.

The incident remains under investigation.
