South Bend Police Department inducts six new officers

With an eye toward diversity, six new police officers have been welcomed to the South Bend Police Department.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg cites the importance of a police force reflecting the community, a sentiment echoed recently by President Obama after the events in Ferguson, Mo.

Currently, less than 10 percent of the South Bend Police force is black while more than a quarter of the community is.

Of the six new South Bend officers who received their badges, four are white, one is black and one is Hispanic.
