During the past several months, the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has filed an increased number of child victims, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there is an immediate spike in incidents.

Rather, it’s the result of the prosecutor reducing prolonged delays in investigations brought on when one-third of the deputy prosecuting staff resigned during late 2012 and early 2013.

Prosecutor Curtis Hill says it was an unprecedented eight attorneys who left in the midst of county government’s decision to withhold a pay raise for employees.

Since then, resources were reallocated, new hires were made and trained and the cases that had been delayed for review were placed back on track.

At this point, filing decisions have been made in all cases from 2013, as have two-thirds of the cases filed last year.
