Elkhart City Council could debate a measure that would expand civil rights protections for the LGBT community as soon as June. 

During its meeting Monday, May 4, city council formally heard the matter for the first time, and could take it up for debate either June 8 or 22, or during a special meeting, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners at The Elkhart Truth. 

The proposal comes amid discussion and controversy about the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, though the legislative session adjourned at the end of April.

Moore proposes expanding protections in the city’s human relations ordinances and would include protections based on sexual orientation and gender, according to The Elkhart Truth. 

Elkhart City Council president Brian Thomas assigned the proposal to a special committee comprised of the whole council, according to The Elkhart Truth.
