A Dowagiac man has been taken into custody for questioning after police say a woman was shot and killed during an argument. 

Cass County Sheriff deputies were called to the 24000 block of Flanders Street in Dowagiac just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

When police got there, a 9-year-old child and an older man was coming out of the home. The man surrendered to emergency personnel, according to the news release.

Officers found a woman fatally shot inside the house.

Police believe there was a verbal argument between the man and woman before the shots were fired, according to the news release. 

The child was taken to a local hospital for examination but was not believed to have been injured.
