One injured in fire on Western Avenue on Tuesday morning

One person was taken to an area hospital after a fire on Western Avenue in South Bend on Tuesday morning, June 30.

Firefighters with the South Bend Fire Department were called to 2012 W. Western Avenue at about 9:15 a.m. The business at that location is Palacio Tropical, a bar, but the fire happened in an apartment above the bar.

Four people were inside the building when the fire started, WNDU reported. At least one person escaped on a ladder.

A male victim was taken to an area hospital in an ambulance to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners ABC 57. He is in “very serious” condition, South Bend Fire Chief Steve Cox said.

Traffic was blocked on Western Avenue between Olive and Walnut streets for several hours on Tuesday.
