A man suspected of shooting a 40-year-old South Bend man to death over the weekend was charged with murder on Monday, July 13.

Michael J. Jones is accused of shooting Eddy Hill outside Antonio’s Bar and Grill in South Bend early Saturday morning, July 11. Hill was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside the bar with several pieces of spent handgun cartridges near his body, according to court documents.

The shooting happened after an argument began inside Antonio’s Bar and Grill, according to court documents. Hill and Jones had been out Friday night, July 10, with a group of friends at one bar earlier in the evening and then went to Antonio’s.

At some point in the evening, Hill and Jones got into an argument at Antonio’s about how much attention Jones was paying to Hill’s girlfriend, according to court documents. The two went to the bar’s parking lot and continued arguing.

Jones went to his vehicle nearby and, while walking back, began shooting a handgun at Hill, according to court documents. A witness told police that at least three bullets were fired by Jones. Hill was not armed.

Jones left the bar with another person. Officers with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide unit went to the home of the person Jones was with and seized a vehicle there that a witness said had been driven by Jones earlier in the evening.

Police attempted to reach the person that Jones was last seen with but were unsuccessful, according to court documents. At one point, police traced that person’s cell phone to Valparaiso.

Jones eventually turned himself in to the South Bend Police Department and was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on Sunday morning, July 12.

If convicted, Jones faces up to 65 years in prison, according to Indiana sentencing guidelines.
