An ordinance proposal that would ban the use of cell phones by drivers in the city of South Bend has been put on the back burner for now.
South Bend Common Councilman Henry Davis Jr., who proposed the ordinance, asked that the issue be tabled during the health and public safety committee meeting Monday, July 13, according to WNDU. Davis wasn’t able to attend the committee meeting.
The proposed ordinance would make using any handheld device, including a cell phone, illegal in city limits.
The ban would not apply in emergency situations. Fleet management systems, dispatching devices, CB radios and music players would not be banned.
Hands-free devices likes Bluetooth headsets and portable car phone holders would be allowed.
