12-year-old stabbing suspect to remain in police custody until Aug. 6 hearing

A 12-year-old girl suspected in the stabbing death of her stepmother in Elkhart will stay at the juvenile detention center until at least next week.

During a hearing on Monday, July 27, Magistrate Dean Burton ordered the girl to stay at the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Center until her initial hearing set for Aug. 6, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners The Elkhart Truth.

Formal charges have not been filed.

The girl is suspected of stabbing her stepmother, Maria Torres, and father in the 900 block of Prairie Street in Elkhart after an argument on July 24. Torres died at the scene. The girl’s father was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Elkhart General Hospital.
