The city of South Bend recently took the next step in the process to possibly sell Elbel Park Golf Club to a private company and had the property appraised.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg discussed the appraisal and potential sale during an appearance on WSBT on Monday morning, July 27.

”No decisions have been made (about selling Elbel), but everything has to be on the table,“ Buttigieg said. ”You know, we’re continuing to run our city on a tight budget. We’re lucky to have these great golf courses, but the question is, should all these golf courses be owned and operated by the government? If there’s another, better answer for that property that also makes sense for taxpayers, we have to at least consider it.“

It hasn’t been decided whether Elbel would be sold as a golf course or as land to be developed, but Buttigieg said that every option is being considered.

Elbel is a 313-acre course located west of the South Bend city limits in Warren Township.

South Bend Parks Superintendent Phil St. Clair told the South Bend Tribune in June that the city is also considering selling the Newman Recreation Center, and a decision on both properties is expected in the fall.
