Conditions at St. Joseph County Jail ordered eased for Indianapolis blast convict

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A judge has ordered a jail to ease conditions for an Indianapolis man awaiting sentencing on charges stemming from a deadly house explosion.

WXIN-TV reported St. Joseph Superior Court Judge John Marnocha has ordered Mark Leonard “shall not be confined within any steel side cell or padded cell” and “the defendant shall enjoy.standard inmate clothing and access to shower facilities.”

Court documents filed Tuesday said the 46-year-old Leonard was being held in padded “suicide prevention” cell at the Joseph County Jail in South Bend, could wear only a thick smock and was not allowed to shower for 16 days. It says those conditions followed his July 14 conviction on murder, arson and conspiracy charges stemming from the 2012 explosion.

A message seeking comment was left for a jail spokesman.
