A three-year-old child suffered just minor injuries after the toddler’s father tried to take his own life by jumping off the Main Street Bridge onto the toll road below.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

Mishawaka Police say two witnesses found a vehicle parked facing the wrong way on the overpass.

One of the witnesses then saw a 45-year-old South Bend man holding the toddler. He then jumped off of the bridge and he and his son landed on the inside leftbound lane of the toll road.

The citizen had stopped tried to stop the man but lost his grip due to the loose clothing the man was wearing.

The citizen then got down to the interstate and tried to drag both the man and the child off the road. Police showed up to help. Both the man and the child were taken to Memorial Hospital.

The father passed away from injuries sustained from the jump. The good news is that the three-year-old was not seriously injured and is expected to be released from the hospital within a day or so.
