A popular tiger at the Potawatomi Zoo was euthanized Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, after his health declined recently.

Flash, a 19-year-old Amur tiger, was showing signs of renal failure and suffered from arthritis, according to a news release from the Potawatomi Zoo.

“With Flash’s age and the chronic diseases he was suffering, we determined his quality of life had deteriorated to the point that euthanasia was the only option,” Dr. Ronan Eustace, the zoo’s veterinarian. “This is a very sad time for all of us.”

Amur tigers are found primarily in the Russian Far East and a few may live in northern China and North Korea, according to the news release. Amur tigers are endangered as there are less than 500 left in the wild because of poaching and habitat losses.
