LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State insurance regulators say Michigan residents and small businesses will see smaller health insurance cost increases next year.

The Department of Insurance and Financial Services said Tuesday that for 2016, individual rates will increase an average of 6.5 percent and the small group plans will increase 1 percent.

Officials say many states are reporting increases of at least 10 percent. Michigan’s rate hikes for this year were 8 percent for individuals and 5.7 percent for small groups.

The state says the changes affect about 900,000 residents enrolled in individual or family policies or through their small group employer.

Open enrollment for next year begins Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 31.
