Buchanan Middle School students will have a few extra days of summer break before returning to school after a thief or thieves stole thousands of dollars of copper and severely damaged the middle school building earlier this month.

Students are expected to return to class Sept. 14, according to the Buchanan Community Schools website. That’s six days after the originally scheduled start date of Sept. 8.

Orientation — which was to be Sept. 1 at Buchanan High School — was also rescheduled. It will be on Sept. 10 at the Buchanan Middle School gym.

Construction crews have been working overtime to repair the damage at Buchanan Middle School after a suspect or group of suspects broke in sometime between the afternoon of Aug. 15 and the morning of Aug. 17.

Thousands of dollars worth of copper material was ripped from the walls and ceiling and stolen.

Repairs are still underway at the building. Police are still investigating.
