Neighbors of a St. Joseph County-owned vacant lot on Dubail Street near Twyckenham Drive in South Bend are concerned after their repeated calls for someone to take care of the overgrowth on the property have gone unanswered.

Marie Ruiz, who owns the home next door to the lot, told the South Bend Tribune that she’s called the health department, the mayor’s office, REAL Services and any other organization or department she could possibly think of to get the overgrowth removed, all to no avail.

In the past few years, the lot has grown into a jungle of grass, bushes, trees and weeds, which Ruiz believes has given cover to criminals who have attempted to break into her home this summer.

Randy Wilkerson, director of South Bend’s code enforcement, said that the city normally takes care of county-owned lots within city limits and doesn’t bill the county for the work. But the amount of work that this particular lot may require could mean that the city would ask the county to pay for it, according to the Tribune.
