LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A bill advancing in Michigan’s Legislature targets companies that charge unsuspecting residents 50 to 100 times what a local government charges for a copy of a property deed.

The Senate approved a bill 35-0 Thursday designed to make people aware they can buy a deed copy for $1 or $2 from a local government, not the $80 to $100 billed by outside companies.

The measure prohibits companies from charging more than four times what a local government charges and requires companies to note on their solicitations that records are directly obtainable from the government.

The solicitations also would have to note that no action is legally required by people being solicited.

The legislation goes to the House for its consideration.
