Scammers pretending to be Elkhart County Sheriff's Department officer targeting Elkhart County residents

A new scam targeting Elkhart County residents involves a threat from someone pretending to be an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officer.

In the scam, the caller says they’re a sheriff’s department officer and that there is a warrant for the person’s arrest. The caller may have detailed information about a warrant, including which judge signed it, according to Sgt. Chris Snyder with the Elkhart Police Department.

The caller then mentions a fine and gives instructions for how to pay it over the phone, the warrant will go away.

Snyder said that this is a scam and that the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department doesn’t call about warrants. Instead, officers reach out to someone in person or through the mail.

Anyone with information about the scam is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Department at 574-295-7070 or the department tip line at 574-389-4777.
