TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana officials say a new system will provide semitrailer drivers on Interstates 65, 70 and 94 with current information on safer places to park their rigs than highway ramps and rest area shoulders.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield tells the Terre Haute Tribune-Star the state will receive $4 million from a $25 million grant to eight states to implement the Truck Parking Information and Management System. The state will contribute a 10 percent match.

When it’s activated, INDOT will be able to broadcast real-time parking info through electronic message signs, traveler information websites and smartphone applications.

Wingfield said INDOT plans public-private partnerships with truck stops to provide parking for semitrailers.

The other states participating in the parking system are Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
