Golden Globes 2016: Netflix, Amazon Video streaming services nominated more than traditional TV networks

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — The latest on the 73rd annual Golden Globes nominations announced Thursday in Beverly Hills, California, by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (all times local):

7:10 a.m.

Streaming services have edged out traditional television and cable networks for the most nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards.

Netflix leads all television creators with eight nominations, aided by its series “Orange Is the New Black” ‘‘House of Cards” and “Narcos.”

Amazon Video also picked up five nominations, with several for its shows “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” Actors Jeffrey Tambor of “Transparent” and Gael García Bernal earned acting nominations for their work on the series.

Cable networks HBO and Starz earned seven and six nominations during Thursday’s announcement of the Globe nominations.

ABC received the most nominations of the traditional networks, with its show “American Crime” earning three of the network’s four nominations.

The Golden Globe Awards will air Jan. 10 on NBC.

The Golden Globe nominees for best actor in a musical or comedy motion picture are: Christian Bale, “The Big Short”; Steve Carell, “The Big Short”; Matt Damon, “The Martian”; Al Pacino, “Danny Collins”; Mark Ruffalo, “Infinitely Polar Bear.”

The Golden Globe nominees for best actress in a musical or comedy motion picture are: Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”; Melissa McCarthy, “Spy”; Amy Schumer, “Trainwreck”; Maggie Smith, “The Lady in the Van”; Lily Tomlin, “Grandma.”

6:25 a.m.

The Golden Globe Awards attract Hollywood’s biggest names to a boozy, unpredictable party.

One way to encourage stars’ attendance is to nominate them for awards.

Stars who received a nomination for best actress in a motion picture drama are: Cate Blanchett, “Carol”; Brie Larson, “Room”; Rooney Mara, “Carol”; Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn”; Alicia Vikander, “The Danish Girl.”

The male acting nominees in the drama motion picture category are: Bryan Cranston, “Trumbo”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant”; Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs”; Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl”; Will Smith, “Concussion.”

6:15 a.m.

The Golden Globe nominees for best motion picture director have been announced in Beverly Hills, California. They are: Todd Haynes, “Carol”; Alejandro G. Inarritu, “The Revenant”; Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight”; George Miller, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; Ridley Scott, “The Martian.”

6:10 a.m.

Todd Haynes 1950s romance “Carol” landed a leading five nominations, including best dramatic picture, in nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globes.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nominations, announced Thursday in Beverly Hills, California, spread nods around to a widespread field. Landing four nominations were Adam McKay’s finance farce “The Big Short,” the Apple co-founder drama “Steve Jobs” and Alejandro Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant.”

Joining “Carol” and “The Revenant” in nods for best picture drama are: “Mad Max: Fury Road,” ‘‘Room” and “Spotlight.”

Ricky Gervais returns as host for the Globes on Jan. 10.

6:05 a.m.

The Golden Globe nominees for best actor in a TV comedy series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California. They are: Aziz Ansari, “Master of None”; Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”; Rob Lowe, “The Grinder”; Patrick Stewart, “Blunt Talk”; Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent.”

5:58 a.m.

The Golden Globe nominees for best actor and actress in TV drama series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California.

The best actor nominees are: Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”; Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot”; Wagner Moura, “Narcos”; Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”; Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan.”

The best actress nominees are: Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”; Viola Davis, “How to Get Away with Murder”; Eva Green, “Penny Dreadful”; Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”; Robin Wright, “House of Cards.”

5:10 a.m.

Reporters and industry insiders are gathering at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, for the announcement of nominees for the Golden Globe Awards.

Banks of television cameras and reporters are assembled before the stage, which is flanked by two large Globe award statuettes.

Actors Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid will announce the nominations for honors for tops television and film awards bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

A Globes nomination can give a show, film or actor not only a bump in audience, but an edge in Hollywood’s crowded awards season.

Ricky Gervais will return as host for the Globes when it airs on NBC on Jan. 10.
