Funeral for slain central Indiana police officer set for Tuesday

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) — Law enforcement officers from across the country are expected to attend the funeral of a central Indiana sheriff’s deputy shot and killed in the line of duty.

The funeral for Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz was set for Tuesday at the gymnasium inside Northwestern High School. That’s where the 27-year-old served as a resource officer.

Koontz was killed during a gunfight March 20 inside a mobile home in Russiaville. The shooter killed himself.

Hundreds of law officers and members of the public filed into the gymnasium Monday for Koontz’s visitation. Police officers on motorcycles and squad cars escorted Koontz’s casket to the school outside Kokomo in a procession from a funeral home.
