Jury finds South Bend teen convicted of murder had gang ties

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Jurors have decided a South Bend teenager found guilty of murder for bringing a gun to an alleged gang fight that led to the 2014 death of a 2-year-old also is guilty of criminal gang enhancement.

The finding by the jury Friday means 17-year-old Tyre Bradbury faces a base sentence of at least 90 years in prison when he is sentenced on April 26.

Prosecutors charged Bradbury with providing the handgun which fired the shot that killed 2-year-old John Swoveland Jr. in April 2014 as he played outside several blocks away.

Defense attorney Brendan Lahey says he is disappointed by the verdict. He says Bradbury wasn’t a member of a criminal gang but was part of a loose group of friends.

Bradbury is the seventh person convicted in the shooting.
