Gas leak in downtown South Bend causes Main Street closure

A portion of Main Street in downtown South Bend is expected to be closed for much of the day on Thursday, May 26, because of a gas leak.

The southbound lanes of Main Street are blocked between Western Avenue and Sample Street, WSBT reported. Drivers are encouraged to detour on Chapin Street.

A construction crew hit a gas line near the TRANSPO terminal just before 9 a.m., South Bend Police said.

NIPSCO has to dig through 16 inches of pavement to find the line to shut off the gas. Nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution, but South Bend Police said there isn’t any immediate danger.
