The explosives strapped to the vest police say a Goshen man was wearing when he was pulled over Wednesday morning were homemade pipe bombs, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Sherman Fuller, 45, was formally charged Friday with possession of an explosive device and failure to register as a sex offender.

Fuller left the vest in his truck and was arrested after speaking with Goshen Police for about an hour. It took about 2 1/2 hours for the Elkhart Bomb Unit to disarm the bombs.

The bombs were described as pipe bombs made with PVC pipe stuffed with fireworks and model rocket engines, the Tribune reported.

Investigators found more PVC pipe, fireworks, model rockets and other items in Fuller’s home when they searched it.

It’s still not clear why Fuller made the bombs or why he was wearing them.
