A LaPorte County woman was killed in a single vehicle crash on Monday, June 27.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies were sent around 6:50 a.m. to the area of County Road 200 East south of State Road 4 after a passerby reported a vehicle overturned in a field.

On arrival, deputies found a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe overturned in a field several hundred feet from the roadway. The driver of the vehicle, who had been ejected, was found lying in front of the vehicle and appeared to have been dead for some time, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Norma E. Vermette, 22, of rural LaPorte County.

The SUV was traveling north on County Road 200 East when it failed to negotiate a left hand curve. The vehicle went off of the road, struck a large tree and then rolled several times before coming to rest on its side in a field, , the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office reported.

“This was a very violent crash and may have been survivable had a seatbelt been said to LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy Corey Chavez.

This is the second fatal crash at the same location in less than a year. On October 24, 2015 a 35-year-old man from Union Mills, Indiana was killed in a similar crash at the exact location.
