Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thompson is blaming Sunday morning’s shooting of seven people on Kirkwood Ave., during Homecoming weekend, on Indiana’s gun laws, saying on social media Sunday afternoon that she was planning a push to help make changes.
“Even with extensive advance planning, increased staffing and a visible law enforcement presence, no public safety plan can eliminate every act of violence,” she said, praising the police officers she says were on the scene for preventing further violence.
Thompson said that because the weekend’s events were expected to bring large crowds that a plan was in place, specifically for the area where the shooting happened.
But, Thompson said she believes Indiana’s gun laws are at least partly to blame for what happened.
“As we all know, Indiana has lax gun laws that prevent communities from developing safety measures at large gatherings,” she said. “And, while we can ask people not to bring firearms to large public gatherings, it’s not enough.”
Thompson said she would ask for a new law that allows cities to use the same protocols as stadiums and for private events, where people have to go through metal detectors.
“It’s a common sense step that I hope will find bipartisan support,” she said.
Thompson said she will be trying to gather support for the possible legislation before next year’s legislative session.

I understand the need for stricter event precautions. But once again, its mental health issues that are the cause. Not guns. Not current laws.
