INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — As a conservative talk-radio host in the 1990s, Mike Pence described himself as “Rush Limbaugh on decaf.”

Decades later, the unflappable Indiana governor has caught the eye of a brash New Yorker who is his temperamental opposite: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Pence is one of several Republicans Trump is considering for his vice presidential running mate. Trump is expected to announce his decision on Friday.

Adding Pence, 57, to the Republican ticket could add some message discipline to Trump’s whipsawing campaign. He could forge links with conservatives, and wealthy donors who have dismissed Trump. He’s well-regarded by evangelical Christians, and he knows the ropes in Congress after more than a decade in the House.

Pence likes to say he’s a conservative, but he’s “not angry about it.”
