Elkhart’s aquatic center plans slowly taking shape

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

We’re in the final stretch when it comes to getting new details on Elkhart’s new aquatic center.

Officials say that renderings and details on the 160,000-square-foot facility will come in mid-November, according to the Elkhart Truth.

The project calls for an Olympic-sized swimming pool, diving well, and two smaller pools at the former Elkhart Youth and Community Center on East Jackson Blvd. It will also feature a lifestyle fitness center, a weight-loss clinic, locker rooms, multi-purpose rooms, and a gymnasium.

Construction will begin in the spring of 2017, with completion by the end of 2019.

Officials say that they still need to raise about $5 million for the $65 million project. The project could scale back if the money isn’t raised.

Projections estimate that up to 100,000 out-of-town visitors would be lured to Elkhart with a new aquatics center, with up to 15,000 overnight stays.
