St. Joe County officer struck by tanker/trailer released from hospital.

The St. Joseph County police officer struck by a semi tanker on State Road 2 has been released from the hospital.

The collision happened just before 12 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, in the area of the 30000 block of SR 2, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.

Corporal Lonny Foresman, 48, was responding to a couple of traffic-related incidents at the scene and was alongside the road when the driver of a semi lost control of his vehicle, the sheriff’s department reported.

Foresman saw the vehicle coming toward him and tried to get out of the way, but was clipped by the sliding trailer. He was knocked into the air, and landed in a ditch.

He was able to call in for help on his radio.

The 54-year-old South Bend man continued driving, unaware that his trailer had struck the officer, the sheriff’s department reported.

Other officers located the semi as it was getting onto the US 20. The company that owns the truck is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

Foresman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released by late Thursday night.
