Indiana bill would allow police to disperse protesters if they’re blocking traffic

A bill in the Indiana Senate would allow police to remove a protest group of 10 or more people if they’re blocking traffic.

This drew a protest at the Statehouse Wednesday from people who feel that this would allow lawmakers to silence protesters in Indiana, according to the Indy Star.

The bill would give police 15 minutes to “dispatch all available law enforcement officers” after getting a report of protests blocking traffic “with directions to use any means necessary to clear the roads.”

Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Portage) is questioning Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) use of the phrase “by any means necessary” in the bill, using historical photos of protest crackdowns by police to make her point during a committee meeting.

The bill will get a hearing in the Senate Committee on Local Government.
