The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following new information about the deadly crash that happened at State Road 933 and Darden Road on Tuesday, Feb. 21, during a police chase that originated in Berrien County:
On 2/21/17 at about 3:40 p.m., a gold Chevy TrailBlazer struck a green pickup truck at the corner of Darden Rd. and SR 933.
The driver of the green pickup truck, Andre Northern, age 62 of South Bend, died at the scene.
An autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, determining that Andre Northern died as a result of blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.
While the investigation is ongoing, detectives learned that 4 other vehicles were damaged. A large number of witnesses were interviewed.
FACT detectives learned that Berrien County Sheriff Deputy Matthew Walls had observed the gold Chevy TrailBlazer approximately 1.5 miles north of the Indiana border. He had previously been advised that it had been reported stolen.
After verifying that the TrailBlazer was stolen, Deputy Walls activated his overhead lights and siren in an attempt to stop it. The TrailBlazer then fled south, crossing into St. Joseph County, where the TrailBlazer eventually crashed into the pickup truck.
Four occupants inside the TrailBlazer were extracted by emergency personnel.
The occupants were then transported to Memorial Hospital for serious injuries. At last check, two of the occupants are in the ICU at Memorial Hospital, in stable condition. All 4 occupants are believed to be from Niles.
FACT investigators are conferring with the Prosecutor’s Office, and it is anticipated that a charging decision will be made on Thursday.
