Owners of missing Yorkie in Elkhart take to billboards to find him

The quest to find a beloved Yorkshire Terrier that was stolen from an Elkhart hotel last month has gone to the billboards.

A billboard offering a reward for the safe return of “Toot” was placed outside Callahan’s Restaurant near the Indiana Toll Road this week, according to the Elkhart Truth.

A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe raised the $450 needed for the billboard in just two days. A Facebook page called “Where’s Toot” has almost 400 followers as of Monday afternoon.

Toot’s owner, Leigh Bowden of Florida, told the Elkhart Truth that all of the help so far has been overwhelming.

Toot went missing when he escaped from a hotel room at the Garden Inn on Cassopolis St. on Feb. 3. Security cameras appear to show a car pulling up in the parking lot, someone in the car grabbing Toot, and then driving away.

A lack of tips and evidence since then has rendered the case inactive for Elkhart police detectives. Bowden is hoping the owner simply doesn’t know that Toot was stolen and that he or she will eventually step forward.

Toot has a skin condition and will become ill if not treated with prescription medicine. Bowden’s hopeful the dog is taken to a vet and a scan will reveal Toot’s identity.
