One dead, four hurt in three vehicle crash north of Wakarusa

A teenage boy is dead and four others had to be taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle wreck north of Wakarusa Sunday night.

The crash happened at the intersection of S.R. 19 and New Rd./Nappanee St. at about 7:45 p.m., according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers say the crash happened when a pickup being driven by a 62-year-old Elkhart woman driving south on S.R. 19 clipped the back of the left side of a car heading eastbound on New Rd. As a result, the Elkhart woman’s car crossed the center line and sideswiped a pickup truck being driven by a 38-year-old man from Pikeville, KY. The pickup couldn’t stop in time to avoid the first car, hitting it in the passenger’s side.

A 17-year-old boy in the eastbound car was killed as a result of the crash. The driver and three other passengers in the car were all taken to the hospital. At least two of the passengers taken to the hospital were unconscious at the scene. The Elkhart woman driving the first pickup wasn’t hurt. The other pickup driver from Kentucky was not taken to the hospital, though he did have a complaint of pain.

The crash is still being investigated.
