ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — An Elkhart police chase that ended when a motorist crashed into a century-old fountain’s marble benches apparently left the fountain itself unscathed.
Elkhart city spokeswoman Courtney Bearsch says the city is working to get estimates from companies specializing in marble to determine how much it will cost to repair the benches, which were carved from imported Italian marble.
Police say a man fleeing police last Friday hit a utility pole and slammed into the 104-year-old fountain’s benches. His car came to rest atop them, with shattered marble scattered about.
Bearsch tells The Elkhart Truth the fountain appears unharmed and should function as normal.
A statue of Elkhart’s founder, Dr. Havilah Beardsley, that’s part of the fountain also appears unharmed by the car’s impact.
