Elkhart County authorities investigating report of maggot in inmate’s food

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is defending the cleanliness of the kitchens at their jail after an inmate reported a maggot in his food.

The inmate made the claim Sunday night, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Captain James Bradberry says jail staff did find a single larva, but it’s unclear if that bug came from the food or somewhere else. Bradberry says jail staff did a thorough search of the kitchen and its drains, and workers there didn’t find any other larvae or other issues.

Friends and family of Elkhart County inmates are still worried. Bradberry says the jail’s kitchen must adhere to health department standards of safety, and is inspected periodically.

Prison lives matter! April 25, 2017 at 10:47 am

Only in America can prisoners voice any concern about anything. (and we actually listen to it and care?) Does anyone believe the “maggot” got in the food in the kitchen? I think we should always put maggots in the prison food. Free protein to keep the prisoners strength up after there rigorous day of nothing!
