Elderly Dowagiac man struck by vehicle, driver placed under arrest

One person was arrested after striking an elderly man with a vehicle in Dowagiac.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12 on South Lowe Street near Hendryx Street in Dowagiac.

A vehicle had been stopped in the northbound lane of Lowe Street as a pedestrian was speaking to the occupant of that vehicle. A second northbound vehicle came up behind the stopped vehicle and attempted to pass in the oncoming lane of traffic. As they did, the pedestrian stepped into the path of the passing vehicle, according to a report from the Dowagiac Police Department.

The pedestrian, a 72 year-old man from Dowagiac, struck the passenger side windshield area of the vehicle and was thrown to the ground, the report stated.

The victim was alert and conscious at the scene. He was transported to an area hospital with serious but, non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, the report stated.
