An Elkhart woman is accused of incorporating a business just so she could defraud two bank branches.

Court documents say 27-year-old Chonnise Davenport opened accounts at two unidentified bank branches in Elkhart in March 2016 on behalf of her business, Crestmark Service Inc. For the next five months, she stole, counterfeited or altered checks, deposited them into the two accounts, then withdrew money for personal gain, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Federal investigators say Davenport obtained over $48,000 in the scheme, then concealed, misrepresented and hid evidence of the scheme from investigators.

A federal grand jury indicted her this past week. The federal government is seeking reimbursement of the stolen funds, according to court documents.

Davenport remains in custody on no bond.
