Strolling along the duck pond at Leeper Park could soon be a thing of the past.
Among the proposals in the South Bend Riverfront Parks and Trails project is the removal of the pond. The South Bend Tribune reports that the parks department feels the pond has become too unsanitary, and no longer provides a healthy environment for ducks and geese.
Support for the duck pond, which has been part of Leeper Park since the early 20th century, has already begun to appear on social media.
Officials point out that the high population and stagnant water are not good for the birds, which tend to avoid migration in order to live off the feed given to them by locals.
