Just about every industry you can think of in Elkhart County probably has at least one job opening in it.
That’s because there’s 20,000 jobs available in Elkhart County. That’s according to Mark Dobson, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Elkhart County, who told the South Bend Tribune that the industries seeking help aren’t just in the booming recreational vehicle industry, but even white collar position are available.
Dobson says companies have even sat in fast-food restaurants and poached the hardest workers on the spot with positions that pay $3 to $5 more per hour. Some restaurants even close during the day or only operate a drive-thru due to a shortage of employees.
Elkhart County workers made about $19.25 an hour on average in May 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dobson hopes that people hear more about opportunities that don’t need a four-year degree – like welders, plumbers, and electricians – and end up settling in Elkhart County.
