8 p.m. UPDATE: Regular weekday train service has resumed in both directions. The South Shore expects to operate a regular A.M. rush hour schedule on June 7 with a reduced number of cars on each train. 18 cars remain trapped at Millennium Station because of Tuesday’s derailment. Expect crowded conditions on most trains. The South Shore plan to use all available cars including bike rack cars. Maintenance crews were expected to work throughout the night to clear the derailment and restore normal service to South Shore’s platforms at Millennium Station.
CHICAGO (AP) — The derailment of a commuter train near downtown Chicago has disrupted service between the city and South Bend.
The South Shore Line train, which originated in Dune Park, Indiana, derailed Tuesday near the final stop at Millennium station in the Loop business district. The train was traveling at a slow speed when the derailment occurred. Authorities say two people suffered minor injuries.
The train appeared to derail in an area where trains switch tracks as they enter the station at Randolph street.
The South Shore Line website says its trains are unable to enter or exit the station. The railroad is advising passengers to find alternative transportation for their commute.
The derailment has also disrupted service on the Metra Electric line. The two commuter railroads share tracks.

Should we expect anything less from a commercial entity that makes its money off of transportation?
I think not. Unless it is just another bureaucracy making its money off of tax payers who don’t provide its necessary funding.
