(Diana Gutierrez/ABC 57)

The driver of a pickup truck is dead after crashing the truck into a tree near a house southwest of South Bend.

The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. on State Road 23 between the bypass and North Liberty. Westbound lanes of S.R. 23 were closed shortly afterwards.

Officers at the scene told ABC 57 the truck never actually hit the house, but rather a tree in front of the house. Medics declared him dead shortly after they responded.

It’s not known why the driver left the roadway.

The St. Joseph County Police Department, Southwest Central Fire Territory, and the St. Joseph County Coroner all assisted at the scene.
